Magistrate to Minister:

Advise your children to behave

by Sarath Malalasekara

Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarath C. Karunaratne told Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Wijesekera to advise his children to behave properly in public.

"You are holding a high position in this country and you should advise your children to behave properly in public places," the Judge strongly asserted in his observation accepting Minister Wijesekera as surety for the six suspects that included Minister S. B. Dissanayake's sons in a brawl at a five star hotel in Colombo recently.

The Judge ordered an inquiry into the use of official vehicles.

The Judge made these observations accepting Minister Wijesekera as the surety for the six suspects, including Wijesekera's son, two sons of Dissanayake and three others.

They were produced before court by the CID in connection with unlawful assembly, causing simple hurt and damaging public property at a night club on January 10 at 4.30 a.m.

The six suspects are Anjana Nawaratne, W. Harishmani Panditharatne, Keerthi Tharaka Bandara Dissanayake, Supun Sathiya Weerakoon, Narada Bandara Dissanayake and Kanchana Wijesekera.

Addressing the two complainants in the case, Mohamed Nawfer Junaid and Mohamed Suki Hussain relatives of Tertiary Education Minister Kabir Hashim, the Judge said they should not have used official vehicles for private parties. "This is a very unsatisfactory situation", the Judge observed.

After the submissions by the defence counsel and the CID, the Judge ordered the suspects to furnish surety bail in Rs.5,000 each and directed them to appear in court on January 27.

The Judge told the suspects if they want to leave the country they should obtain prior permisions from court.

Anil Silva, who appeared for the three suspects, moving for bail submitted to court that the complainant's party and his clients are very close friends.

"There had been an unfortunate incident. Now they wish to settle this issue amicably," he said. During the incident several suspects also received serious injuries. Now they regret what had happened, Silva told court.

Anil Silva, Thirantha Walaliyadda, Sarath Kohangahage, Deemani Beddewela, Shamalee Karunathilleke, Sarath Siriwardena, Jayaki de Alwis, Jayantha Dias Nanayakkara and Shiraz Noordeen appeared for the suspects.

A team of CID officers appeared for the prosecution. Kingsley Hettiarachchi watched the interests of the two complainants.
