Envoy hopes Lanka learns from Canadian example

Canadian High Commissioner Valerie Raymond on Monday expressed the hope that Sri Lanka too would learn from the Canadian example of tolerance and understanding and achieve lasting unity and peace in its indigenous diversity.

She expressed this sentiment when addressing the gathering at the inauguration of the 18th General Course of Diplomacy of the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI) at the BMICH auditorium.

Earlier Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bernard Goonetilleke who was the chief guest and the Canadian High Commissioner who was the guest of honour inaugurated the training course by lighting the oil lamp.

Raymond said Canada had an unique character which has made it the first nation in the world to achieve a wholly integrated multi-ethnic community.

The multi-ethnic concept adopted by Canada 30 years ago had resulted in Canada emerging as a vibrant, prosperous and enlightened nation in the world today, the envoy said.

She said Canada was home to many of the world's people and as a result, it enjoyed a rich and diverse culture which provided her people a most satisfying and desirable quality of life.

She said the Canadian government too made great efforts towards providing quality training for its diplomatic personnel. Canada has granted a tremendous amount of aid, relief and support towards countries in need of such assistance.

Chief guest Bernard Goonetilleke gave an overview of the development of diplomacy in the country and the Foreign Ministry's activities to date.

Expressing satisfaction at the quality of the training programs conducted by the BIDTI, he stressed the need for continued training programs of such calibre.

Director General, BIDTI Deshamanya Dr. Vernon L. B. Mendis outlined the objectives of the institute and described the concept and purpose of the General Course.

He emphasised the importance and value of diplomacy in the successful pursuit of a nation's progress.

Director, BIDTI Prof. Lorna Dewaraja proposed the vote of thanks.
