Top Lankan travel agents win Galileo awards

Galileo, one of the world's most widely-used Global Distribution Systems for aviation and travel products, has honoured 10 travel agencies in Sri Lanka for the high volumes of business they booked through the system in 2003. Gold, Silver and Bronze awards were presented to the three top Galileo users, while seven other leading agencies won awards of excellence at the third awards presentation of Galileo Sri Lanka last week.

Presiding at the ceremony at the Hilton Colombo, Galileo Emirates' Senior Vice President Naz Nizari said 2003 had been a challenging year for the aviation industry.

"There is no doubt that the future isn't going to get any easier. Making the right investment in technology and partnerships will enable you to prepare your businesses for tomorrow," she said.

Ms Nizari said 2004 promises to be an exciting year, with many new Galileo products in the pipeline. She said that "For Galileo Sri Lanka, what lies within us is our vision - offering superior technology with knowledgeable people and superior service enables us to grow your confidence in our partnership. We strive continuously to build on these three important components of our business - technology, service and people."

Galileo Sri Lanka Manager Mahendra Balasuriya said the awards were based on genuine net air bookings, which signify an authentic return to Galileo's supplier partners, the airlines. Describing Galileo's first five years in Sri Lanka as a "fabulous roller-coaster ride," he said: "As the world observes the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' flight, we in the aviation industry are struggling to survive, stabilise and rebuild. We are reworking strategies, markets, structures and products while seeking to redefine relationships with partners, customers and suppliers."

Several key aviation and travel industry personalities including Peter Hill CEO of SriLankan, G. T. Jayaseelan Head of Commercial at SriLankan, Tissa Bibile, Emirates Area Manager for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Ameen Malik Allibhoy, Manager Business Development at Galileo Emirates and Hans Ebeling Galileo Asia Business Development Manager were present.

Mackinnons Travels won the Gold awards as the top Galileo user in Sri Lanka, while Hemas Travels and n-Car Travels & Tours won the Silver and Bronze awards respectively. Awards of Excellence were presented to Reliance Travels and Tours, Jetwing Travels, World Air (Pvt) Ltd., Classic Travels, George Steuarts Travel International, BOC Travels and Gabo Travels.
