SLFP-JVP political union to be sealed today

by Anura Maitipe

The eagerly awaited SLFP-JVP political union will be sealed today ushering a new chapter in Sri Lanka's political history. The signing ceremony at the BMICH is to be simultaneously accompanied by celebratory events in different parts of the country and the provinces.

All eyes will focus on the new alliance -the first time the radical JVP will enter into a political pact with a mainstream party. This is a historic moment for the people and a significant milestone in SLFP's political journey that will lead to a prosperous Sri Lanka, PA General Secretary D. M. Jayaratne told the Daily News yesterday.

The public have organised countrywide ceremonies to mark the occasion while elaborate arrangements have been made by the PA controlled Provincial Councils of the Western, Southern, North Western and North Central Uva and Sabaragamuwa Provinces to celebrate the signing ceremony underlining the show of strength of the new entity.

Leftist parties and a section of Muslim and Tamil parties have also extended support to the new alliance being formed today, he said.

Jayaratne said the discussion between the SLFP and the Communist Party is in progress and "we have come to a consensus over several key issues while discussions held with the LSSP has proceeded smoothly. I am certain that before the end of this month, these two parties will also join the Alliance". The EPDP and EPRLF have also extended support to the Alliance. A faction of the Muslim Congress has also extended support, he said. He said at the forthcoming elections, the Alliance would field their candidates in all districts including the North and Eastern Province.

"The Alliance will launch a house to house campaign and defeat the UNP," Jayaratne said.
