Gunawansa Thera by Chamikara Weerasinghe National Patriotic Movement's Executive Committee member Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera yesterday said the Alliance between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the JVP, faces the momentous task of rebuilding the shattered country and preserving its sovereignty, territorial integrity, cultural identity and natural resources. Ven. Gunawansa Thera said since much is being expected from this Alliance by the public, the SLFP and JVP have a responsibility not to disappoint the public by being wayward in their actions once they start working together. "In considering the political chemistry of the SLFP-JVP Alliance, I think it has the right elements to make a fine socialist progressive mechanism to save the country from degradation and steer it towards governance, sound economic policies and cultural revival," he said. He also noted that both the SLFP and JVP would have to make some sacrifices in order to keep their alliance in tact and unselfishly serve the nation. "A revolutionary step would be needed to resuscitate this country whose resources were on sale to Norwegian and American private companies at large against the will of the public," he said adding that the present government went to the extent of selling sites of our cultural heritage, such as Sigiriya and Galle Fort to private companies. He said it will be the responsibility of the SLFP and JVP to work together to preserve these resources. He said that the UNF regime talked on the lines of stabilising economy of the country with macro economic policies, but they never talked about keeping the country together. "The SLFP and JVP should make amends in that respect to make their alliance a success for the welfare of their countrymen," he said. |
