Donors, LTTE discuss North-East rehabilitation by Ranga Jayasuriya Representatives from some 25 foreign missions in Colombo and donor agencies yesterday met in Killinochchi at an LTTE sponsored meeting to discuss North-East reconstruction and rehabilitation. "The conference was to outline our development and reconstruction proposals (for the North-East) to the donor countries," a spokesman for the LTTE political headquarters told the Daily News. LTTE political chief Thamilselvam who led the LTTE delegation, making a statement called on the donor nations to expedite the assistance for the reconstruction work in the North-East. "Proposals outlined in the LTTE counter-proposals for North-East self-governing authority were also brought up for discussion," he said. Representatives from Japan, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Germany, France, European Union, ADB, World Bank, JICA, JBIC, UNDP, UNICEF and CIDA attended the meeting. Yesterday's meeting was a forerunner to the follow- up meeting for the Tokyo Donor Conference on Reconstruction and Development in Sri Lanka scheduled January 23. The LTTE delegation comprised Thamilselvam's deputy S. Thangan, LTTE Peace Secretariat chief Pulithevan, LTTE economic advisor Dr. Jay Maheswaran and Director of Sub Committee of Immediate Humanitarian and rehabilitation Needs, (SHIRN) Iraneus Selvin. |
