President calls for two major parties to work in harmony

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday said that the two major parties of the country should work harmoniously at all levels at least to solve the major problem of the country despite their political differences.

PC polls, dates to be fixed in April

The date for holding all Provincial Council elections is to be fixed during the final week of April, the government announced yesterday. Cabinet spokesman and Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris told the weekly Cabinet media briefing yesterday that the four major political parties agreed that Provincial Council elections should be held on a single day to minimise disruption and damage to civil functions.
