Ranil fulfilled every promise to LTTE, but not to people - Jinadasa Niyathapala

Former Colombo District Parliamentarian and one time UNP stalwart Jinadasa Niyathapala charged that although Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe failed to fulfil a single pledge given to the people during the last two years, he never failed to fulfil every promise made to the LTTE.

"Like on the previous occasion he is trying to come back to power with the Tigers' support but the public will never allow him to realise his aim," he told an SLFP meeting at Jayagama in Wadumunnegedara.

The former Parliamentarian describing the "so called peace" ushered by the UNP Government "as a farce", observed that what forced the LTTE to ultimately enter into a unilateral ceasefire was the success achieved by the PA Government in restricting the Tigers to the jungles by 2001.

"The ceasefire therefore was not Ranil's achievement but the result of the battles executed under the PA Government," he said.

Niyathapala said: "Ranil Wickremesinghe signed an MoU drafted by the LTTE. Normally an MoU is signed following discussions and an agreement between two or more parties. But in this instance, Prabhakaran first signed the MOU and sent the document to Ranil for his endorsement."

This enabled the LTTE to gain recognition from many countries which had earlier banned it, the Ex Parliamentarian noted adding that the LTTE was now demanding an Interim Adminstration for eight districts in the North-East.

Niyathapala said although the Prime Minister pontificated about democracy, he acted like a true dictator within his party.

"Do UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema and General Secretary Senarath Kapukotuwa hold membership even in local branches of the party", he asked.

He said the duo were only businessmen who are also the Prime Minister's personal friends.

The UNP office-bearers were appointed according to Wickremesinghe's whims and fancies, who acts in a dictatorial manner, Niyathapala said.
