In a letter of resignation addressed to the Prime Minister, Minister Moragoda has mentioned that he would be available for nomination as a candidate of the UNF for the Colombo District if the Prime Minister so wished. Moragoda returned to the country last morning from Japan after discussing issues related to aid to Sri Lanka. Upon receiving the letter of removal from the office of Deputy Minister, Minister Moragoda immediately sent the following resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. "A letter dated 09th February 2004 from the H.E. the President has just come to hand when I arrived in the island this morning after my visit to Japan connected with numerous issues relating to aid to this country. The President's letter removes me from the Post of Deputy Minister of Policy Development & Implementation. I have also been made aware that all Ministers not of Cabinet rank and the Deputy Ministers have also been removed. As you are aware, over the last two years I have done my utmost to discharge the responsibilities given me in taking all possible steps within my power to assist you in moving the peace process forward, to help modernize our economy, assist the Reforms process and obtain the necessary assistance to this country from the international community. Given the current situation I do not think it would be possible in anyway for me to contribute to the progress of the country and the welfare of our people. Under all these circumstances therefore, I do not think that my remaining as a Minister of the Cabinet would be of any use. I would therefore request you to take appropriate action to ensure that my resignation from the position of Cabinet Minister of Economic Reform, Science & Technology is given effect to with immediate effect. I would certainly be available for nomination as a candidate of the UNF for the Colombo District if that would be your wish. I also wish to take this opportunity to convey my sincere thanks to you for the unvarying trust and confidence that you have always placed in me". |
