The European Union's External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten said on Tuesday that the LTTE should renounce violence and reject "any so-called political solution that involves breaking up Sri Lanka, because again that would be totally unacceptable". "What can come out of the election campaign, if you are most enthusiastic and if you keep your fingers crossed, is a commitment by both the main political parties in Sri Lanka to keep the process going," Patten told Reuters during a visit to Kabul, Afghanistan. Sri Lanka's on-off peace process is in danger of being pushed further onto the sidelines by the country's snap general election, he said. "I hope the process made so far isn't jettisoned, I hope the prospects of a better life aren't lost because of political bickering," said Patten, who visited Sri Lanka in November last year. |
