Mr. de Mel speaking on ITN last Tuesday said: “In the last few days, there had been various incorrect reports, in various sections in the mass media concerning myself and also my wife Mallika de Mel, who was an MP in the Matara district in the last Parliament. We have not decided to contest on the UNP ticket. I have requested that I be given nominations from the national list of the PA from Her Excellency the President. In the same way, Mrs. Mallika de Mel like on the last occasion will be contesting on the PA ticket from the Matara district.”

Mahanayakes reject Maha Sangha contesting elections

Contesting Parliamentary Elections by the Maha Sangha is the beginning of the ruin of the Buddha Sasana and cannot be approved under any circumstances, stated the Ven. Mahanayaka Theras of the Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters, in a media announcement yesterday.

National Muslim Congress, Freedom Alliance sign MoU

The Freedom Alliance is firmly committed to protecting the rights of the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim and other communities by preserving their own identities, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga told a gathering in the East as the National Muslim Congress and United People's Freedom Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding at President's House yesterday.

1000 monks to bless Freedom Alliance at Sri Maha Bodhi

Ven. Vatinapaha Somananda Thera, Secretary of the All Island Clergy Organisation in a press release yesterday announced that more than 1000 Buddhist monks will participate in the inaugural rally of the United People's Freedom Alliance at Anuradhapura.
