Mahanayakes reject Maha Sangha contesting elections by Asela Kuruluwansa Contesting Parliamentary Elections by the Maha Sangha is the beginning of the ruin of the Buddha Sasana and cannot be approved under any circumstances, stated the Ven. Mahanayaka Theras of the Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters, in a media announcement yesterday. The joint statement by the Most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Mahanayaka Thera and Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Mahanayaka Thera stated that they learnt through the media that members of the Buddhist clergy have come forward to contest the General Election. This news caused utter alarm and astonishment among the pious, devout Buddhists both of the clergy and the laity. On a careful analysis of the history of Sri Lanka, it becomes abundantly clear that the Buddhist clergy took the forefront in the vanguard of advice and guidance in State activities to protect the Sasana and bring upon the masses, welfare and bliss both in this world and the hereafter. With great compassion and with concern for the continuity of the Buddha Sasana we wish to point that the Maha Sangha should fulfil this responsibility and discharge their duty with circumspect and correct perspective, the Maha Nayaka Theras emphasised in their joint statement. |
