C. J. Senanayake over the glory line

by Sharm de Alwis

Clarence J. Senanayake was the Mighty Atom who walked ten feet tall.

On the sports field, he was a splendid slip fielder at cricket. He won his rugger Lion in 1948 along with Lionel 'Lala' Wadsworth and K. Arumugam.

Although he was from the top drawer as a scrum-half, representative honours evaded him as he was always in the shadow of the three finest scrum-halves the Country has produced - Claire Roeloffsz, S. B. Pilapitiya and Mahes Rodrigo.

Nevertheless, he had a long and illustrious engagement with Kandy Sports Club, captaining the team in 1954. He also played Clifford Cup winning CR & FC team of 1954. He had a stint with Havelocks also.

Clarence had an abiding love for Trinity rugger and was always with the coach, dissecting games and working out methods for improvement.

He served on the Board of Governors of Trinity College for a lengthy period and he was a Trustee of St. Paul's Church in Kandy. He was a Consultant Engineer for Trinity right up to his brief illness.
