Thurstan-Isipatana ends in a draw by Dinesh Weerawansa Thurstan survived some anxious moments after lunch before holding their traditional rivals Isipatana to a draw in their 41st annual cricket encounter for the Blackham Wijewardena Memorial trophy, concluded at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds, Maitland Place yesterday. In reply to Thurstan's first innings total of 180 all out made on day one, Isipatana declared their innings at 157 for 8 at lunch. Despite opening their second essay with a first innings lead of 23 runs, Thurstan were soon in trouble early in the post lunch session. Thurstan top order batsmen never looked comfortable from the start of their second innings. Ever since they lost the first wicket with the total on eight, Isipatana bowlers put pressure on their opponents. Some penetrative bowling by Isipatana saw Thurstan reeling at 18 for 4 with an overall lead of 41 runs with only six second innings wickets in hand and nearly two sessions to go. Problems in the Thurstan camp worsened when they slumped to 57 for 5 and then took tea at 61 for 5. With the top half of batting gone, it looked as if Isipatana could press for a surprise win. But skipper Osuka Mahaarachchi and Shehan Perera batted bravely to make sure there would be no more decisive blows from Isipatana bowlers. They negotiated Isipatana bowlers intelligently in a bid to save the Thurstan team. Mahaarachchi made a fighting 27 before being caught by Gayan Wijesinghe off Nilanchana Sankalpa. Perera's contribution was 28 but it was more than the figure for Thurstan, who were in further trouble at 80 for 6. Sanjaya Dilruksha, who was called in late to bowl in the Thurstan second innings, was successful in tackling Thurstan tail with three quick wickets but by then, Isipatana were running out of time. When Isipatana finally bowled out Thurstan for a hopeless 107 runs in the second essay, they had an impossible task of scoring 131 runs in just seven mandatory overs. Isipatana were 29 for no loss at close. THURSTAN - 1ST INNINGS 180 all out ISIPATANA - 1ST INNINGS S. Nishantha b Amarasinghe 23, M. Amarasinghe c S. Perera b Wickremaratne 27, S.
