Lalith Kumara wins second successive title by Dinesh Weerawansa Sri Lanka's champion golfer, Lalith Kumara won his second successive title inside a week when he emerged champion at the 43rd Pakistan Amateur Golf championships concluded at Arabian Sea Country Golf Club, 40 km downtown Karachi yesterday. Kumara, who won the All-India Amateur Open in Calcutta last week, continued his impressive run with another steady round of golf to aggregate 285 for the four days, three under par. Kumara's final round of 75 yesterday added to previous round of 73 on day one, 70 on second and 67 on third. Indians Harindra Gupta (287) and Vikrant Chopra (289) secured the second and third places. Reports from Karachi said in the heat of the battle yesterday, the leading golfers taking part could not provide too many enthralling moments, mainly because of hot favourites Vikrant Chopra, Vaqua Ahmed, Shahid Javed and Harindra Gupta lasted into losing mode. The Lankan had clawed his way up to the leader board through a heartening five under par on the penultimate day. The reports added that Kumara's final round was practical enough to keep other contenders like India's Ikram Chopra, Vaqua Ahmed and Javed Khan at bay. In an exclusive interview with Daily News after his triumph at the Indian Open the 25-year-old start marshal at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, Kumara said his next target is to win a medal for Sri Lanka at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha and then turn a professional. |
