Indian Raju & Korean Shin win a double each Indian Kushik Raju and Korean Jung Yoon Shin completed a double each at the 21st ITF Junior International Tennis Championships concluded at the National Tennis Centre courts, Greenpath in Colombo, yesterday. Fourth seeded Raju won boys singles and doubles titles while Shin bagged girls singles and doubles title at the under-18 ITF tournament hosted by Sri Lanka Tennis Association. Ranked 456th in the ITF World rankings, Raju had little trouble in overcoming unseeded Korean, Im Ju Yeong in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Even then, the Korean's performance was creditable to make it to the final as he entered the tournament as a qualifier and not an ITF ranked player unlike is opponent. Raju, partnered by Sri Lanka's Amrit Rupasinghe, accounted for Boys doubles title. The Indo-Lankan combination beat Manu Bajbai (India) and Peera Puch (Thailand) 6-1, 7-5 in the final. Korean Shin, ranked 175th in the world, had her own way in thrashing Indian Asha Nandakumar 6-1, 6-1 in Girls final. But the two singles finalists joined together in the Girls doubles final to beat India duo of Burman Shivik and Sunjana Kapur in an exciting three setter 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. The tournament was a well organised affair under the direction of SLTA President Suresh Subramaniam. (D.W.) |
