Binupa holds onto his lead By S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports correspondent Thirteen year student from Wycherly International School, Colombo Binupa Wijesinghe still continues to lead the race for the Lectra Grand Prix (Mens Division one) at the end of the eighth round in January 2004 with 889 points in the monthly medal golf championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by Lectra Apparel & Technologies and worked off every month at the Victoria Golf Course in Rajawella. Wijesinghe with a handicap of 9 fared poorly last month getting only 4 points but his previous performances held him in good stead to lead the race for the title with four more rounds to go with championship ending in May 2004. Wijesinghe now enjoys a lead of 334 points over the second placed Sanjay Wettimuni who has 553 points to his credit. In third place in former Sri Lanka test cricketer and national selector Sidath Wettimuny with 455 points. Both father and son have a chance of having a crack at the title but it will take a herculean effort to get to the top and that too they will have to expect poor form from Wijesinghe. The fourth and fifth places are occupied by Mervin Hettiarachchi 330 points and Srinivas Rao 300 points respectively. Sahil Malhothra, another teenaged student from Colombo International School, Kandy, leads the race for mens division two with 646 points after getting a stupendous 330 points in his medal winning performance in January, 2004. In second place is another schoolboy from Ecole International School, Digana with 536 points. There will be a titanic struggle between this duo for supremacy and with their handicaps coming down they will have a big struggle in their hands. In third place in Veinert Holm with 493 points and fourth place is occupied by Ananda Golf Championship winner Sam Gunaratne with 432 points. Expatriate Mike Emmott is lying fifth with 422 points and in sixth position Ananda Manawadu with 406 points. This division of the championship is still wide open and anyone of the five players named above could win it through good performance. Suwen Selvaratnam though missing three monthly rounds, still continues to lead the race for the womens title with 324 points and she has managed just four points in last three rounds (missed two rounds by not playing). She is followed closely by Hilce Jayatilleke with 308 points who too has missed two rounds in July and November, 2004. The February monthly medal could provide some interesting changes. Indira Tibblins is lying third with 279 points. In third place is Sally Collins with 135 points and Roshini Sangani with 135 points. The Secretary of the Victory Golf and Country Resort Mrs. Jannie Weeratunga said that the competition is hotting up and more and more golfers are participating as this competition provides with the necessary exposure and also gives them the competitive spirit which could be gained only by playing in competitions regularly. |
