30,000 illegal weapons in circulation

The Ministry of Internal Security has estimated that nearly 30,000 illegal weapons are in circulation which has a direct bearing on the increasing crime rate.

Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Security in a circular to all relevant authorities informed that the escalation of serious crimes in the country during the past few years had not only generated considerable insecurity among the public but also tarnished the image of the country built up over centuries.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has also had discussions with religious dignitaries, representatives of political parties, senior public officers, members of the NGOs in the second week of this month with the objective of maximising the people's participation to curb crimes.

They also discussed that the low police clearance rate is an indicator which emphasised the need to increase the efficiency of the criminal investigation and criminal justice system in the country.

The meeting decided to establish the following committees to curb increasing crimes: the National Advisory Council for Curbing Crimes, Co-ordinating District Committee and District and Divisional Level People's Committees.
