Maldivian hotel chain to invest Rs. 200 m on four-star hotel in Gampola

by Shirajiv Sirimane

The Kam Hotel Management in the Maldives will invest Rs. 200 million on a four star hotel in Gampola.

The management has already purchased three and a half acres in Doluwa, Gampola for this project. The hotel would have 50 rooms and when completed would be the third four star plus hotel in the Kandy district after Maheweli Reach and Earls Regency.

According to the Chief Architect of the hotel, Managing Director, Arch International, Romesh Fonseca, construction work would commence in June and it would be completed in 18 months.

The Hotel will have two swimming pools, two large banquet halls and a gymnasium. The banquet halls have been built away from the main hotel so that when functions are being held it would not disturb hotel guests.

The management is hoping to market the hotel mainly for Japanese tourists and the European sector. "The group which operate a four star, Kam hotel in Male and other resorts will market Sri Lanka and the Maldives as one destination," he said.

There are many Japanese tourists visiting Male and their average stay is around seven days.

"What the management is hoping to do is market the beach and cultural tourism," he said.

They hope to get the tourist to stay four days in the Maldives and a four day stay in Sri Lanka in the Cultural Triangle," he said.

He said that the tourists would be taken on day excursions to the Cultural Triangle and Anuradhapura and Polonnnaruwa from the hotel.

Fonseca said that the present political situation has not had any impact on the Maldivian investor since he is a frequent visitor to Sri Lanka. "As long as there is no war situation in Sri Lanka the tourist industry would not be affected," he said.

Kam is a leading hotel for business travellers and tourists in Male. The 31 modern furnished rooms with air-conditioning is the only four-star hotel in Male.
