Turnover up at Bourse

Trading at the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) continued at the same level in terms of activity yesterday. However, the turnover recorded gains at Rs 722,966,268 compared to Rs 407,315,248 the previous day. The increase in turnover was due to Rs. 2 million worth of shares belonging to Aitken Spence being traded.

The CSE All Share Price Index dropped to 1,211.99 points while the Milanka Price Index dipped to 2,028.94 points from 2,055.85 points from Wednesday. According to sources, the market was somewhat sensitive towards the news emerging from the North-East about the LTTE's split. The highest contributors were Aitken Spence, Distilleries, SLT, Sunshine Holdings and Blue Diamonds.

The top five gainers were Industrial Asph, Ferntea Ltd, Browns, Sunshine Holdings and Madulsima.

Domestic purchases stood at Rs 1,677 million and foreign purchases Rs 85 million.

Millennium IT sponsorship of merit-based schols for Moratuwa 'varsity

An agreement will be signed between the University of Moratuwa and Millennium Information Technologies Ltd to sponsor merit-based scholarships for students.

The objective of this scheme is to provide the talented young engineering graduates at the University of Moratuwa with the opportunity to work with some of the leading Software Engineers in Sri Lanka.

The selected candidates will have the opportunity to do their internships at MIT, discuss the emerging technological demands and design programs for their final year, which will be sponsored by MIT. Most importantly, they would have access and be guided by mentors who could assist them reach their full potential.

Japanese Grant-aid assistance for ITI food equipment

The Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) has received food analytical equipment to the value of Rs. 44 million through Japanese Grant-aid assistance that has pledged a total package of Rs. 530 million to upgrade and strengthen the capabilities with respect to food technology, food analytical services and post harvest management so as to provide technological support services to upgrade quality, safety and output of processed food as well as to minimise post harvest losses.

During the first phase of implementation of the project during 2003 microbiological, chemical and physical quality testing equipment have been received.

ABS enters into strategic partnership with CIMA - UK

The Academy of Business Studies (ABS), Sri Lanka has entered into a strategic business partnership with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants UK (CIMA). This partnership brings with it, global recognition for ABS and stands as the first venture of this nature for CIMA.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) supporting the partnership was signed by. Chief Executive, CIMA Charles Tilley and CEO, ABS Faris Ismail at the CIMA Lecturers Conference in London held earlier this year attended by over 250 CIMA delegates from around the world.

The partnership will see CIMA and ABS unite across a range of activities aiming at improving the quality of CIMA tuition as well as expanding into newer markets. Now, CIMA and ABS will share strategic marketing and business plans of mutual interest. Hereafter, ABS will stand among an elite group of CIMA tuition providers throughout the world.

Sega Nagendra re elected

At the Annual General Meeting of the Skal International Colombo held at the Colombo Plaza on February 27, Sega Nagendra, Past President Skal Club of Colombo in 1996/1997 (International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals) was unanimously elected as President for a another term, succeeding Jayantha Panabokke.

Sega Nagendra was the Immediate Past President of Pata (Sri Lanka Chapter) and the Chartered Management Institute - UK Sri Lanka branch.
