The dawn of new era in mobile communication in Sri Lanka was marked when space icon Sir Arthur C. Clarke made a third generation (3G) video telephone call to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Wednesday evening. Dialog GSM which introduced this service, plans to launch it countrywide.

Rid country of corrupt politicians, says President

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday said it was the crying need of the hour to rid the country of corrupt politicians. "Since 1977, politics has become a money spinning business and honest and educated people who can serve the country immensely are not willing to enter politics", she said addressing teachers and Government officials at President's House.

Most corrupt Government in history

The Freedom Alliance yesterday accused the UNF Government of the last two years of being arguably, the most corrupt Government ever in the history of Sri Lanka. "The scale and the speed at which the country and its poor were robbed would dismay even a confirmed cynic," former PA Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera told a media briefing at Taj Samudra hotel yesterday.

Pressure mounted on the Elections Commissioner by the UNP to hold elections in uncleared areas is a ploy to extend indirect support to the LTTE for vote rigging in uncleared areas to help TNA secure more seats in the North, PA General Secretary D. M. Jayaratne told the Daily News.

PM stresses need to continue ceasefire

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday stressed the necessity of continuing the current Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) to move forward the country towards peace and economic prosperity. "This agreement has greatly helped to strengthen the country. Therefore, it is necessary to safeguard this agreement in order to move forward the country, the Premier told an election rally in Mahara last evening.
