Sri Lanka's agriculture sector has shown vast improvement in the last two years, states a press release from the Office of the Government spokesman. The agricultural development ratio which was - 3.4% in 2001, rose to + 2.5 in 2002 under a peaceful atmosphere according to the Central Bank reports. The agriculture development ratio in 2003 was + 1.7, the release said. Paddy cultivation, tea, rubber, and cash crops under the plantation industries along with potato production had improved substantially. Potato production, 58 million kilos in 2001, went up to 89 and 90 million kilos in 2002 and 2003. The total paddy cultivation rose to 3.07 million metric tons from 2.6 million metric tons in 2001. VAT on the import of potato was increased to 15 per cent from 10 per cent to protect the local farmer, but complaints from the consumers regarding high prices compelled the Government to reduce the tariff on potato imports, thereby easing the burdens of the consumer, the release said. |
