Sri Pada conservation project controls polythene menace by Florence Wickramage The Sri Pada Conservation Project has been able to collect 50 lakhs of polythene sheets from the Sri Pada environs within the last six months of last year, said Project Director of the Upper Watershed Management Project (UWMP) D. P. Munaweera recently. The Sri Pada season lasts for only six months each year from Unduwap Poya in December to the Vesak Poya in May. The Environment and Natural Resources Ministry's UWMP has adopted the Sri Pada Conservation Programme as a co-project under the direction of D. P. Munaweera. The Sri Pada Conservation project, supported by the Nallathanniya Police led by OIC, Herath has intensified its drive to educate pilgrims on the need to protect the Sri Pada area from pollution. Volunteers of the project have collected 20 lakhs of sili sili bags, 01 lakh of biscuit cartons and 20,000 empty plastic bottles thrown away haphazardly by pilgrims and visitors in addition to the polythene. The Nallathanniya Police has enforced a `No Polythene' rule strictly for pilgrims and stall-holders on the Sri Pada route. Munaweera said that with the assistance of volunteer organisations and the private sector, information boards have been installed on the route to the summit highlighting the need to preserve Sri Pada from pollution. A private company has donated a large number of dustbins for this purpose. The Project is now in the process of finalising infrastructure facilities for pilgrims to the summit, Munaweera said. |
