President orders security for N-E candidates

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has requested the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission to ask the LTTE to stop forthwith, involvement of LTTE cadres, if any, in the killings of candidates in the North and East, states a Presidential media release.

Following the recent killings of UNP Batticaloa Candidate Sinnathambi Sunderampillai and EPDP security personnel Ponniah Yogendran, the President directed the Defence Secretary to discuss the matter with the SLMM and take all necessary steps.

The President who condemned these killings has also directed the Army Commander to provide total protection to candidates who were deemed to be in need of security.

Any candidate facing death threats can inform the Army Commander who will take steps to provide protection, stated the media release.
