River of Life

While the residents of Colombo agonise over unannounced water cuts, the prolonged drought has made life miserable for millions more in other parts of the country. Many people living in rural areas still depend on rivers and streams for their water supplies. Here bathers from far and near gather on a part of the Mahaweli river, whose mighty flow has been reduced by the drought.

Govt doctors strike today

The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) expressing frustration yesterday, about the feet dragging conduct of health services authorities on the issue of salary anomalies relating to medical officers, announced the launching of a continuous strike from today.

Speaking at a UNP media briefing attended by Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris and Advisor to Tertiary Education and Training Minister Dr. Wickrema Weerasooriya, Prof. Peiris said the President had said she would withdraw her immunity and dared the Samurdhi Minister to sue her if the allegation is false.

Dilan accuses GL of deliberate deception

Former PA MP Dilan Perera yesterday described Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris' recent claim that "all imports will be restricted and the Rs. 4.5 billion aid pledged, to the country will be lost in the event of a Freedom Alliance victory at the forthcoming election as a deliberate deception to mislead the masses.

Retired senior police officers form Monitoring Committee

A group of retired Assistant Superintendents, Superintendents, Senior Superintendents, Deputy Inspector General and Senior Deputy Inspector General met Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse and pledged their support to assist in ensuring a free and fair election.
