Landmine kills 11 in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Wednesday (AFP)

Eleven people were killed when a suspected Maoist rebel landmine blew up their car in Nepal Tuesday, police said.

Six civilians and five government employees died and four people were injured when the device exploded beneath the vehicle taking workers to the Shuklaphant Royal Conservation Centre in western Nepal, police said.

In western Nepal's Doti district, troops shot dead four Maoists in a gun battle, a security official said.

The killings came as witnesses said a week-long Maoist blockade of traffic which has triggered a sharp rise in food prices began to ease.
