People will not re-elect UNF govt - Jeevan

by Hemasiri Dheeraratne

Over 150 strong UNP supporters of Moses Lane, Katukurunda South joined the Freedom Alliance and obtained party membership from Moratuwa SLFP Chief Organiser and former Parliamentarian Jeevan Kumaratunga.

The strong UNP supporters led by Cyril Fernando and Srilal Fernando joined and extended their fullest support to the Freedom Alliance at a meeting at Moses Lane, Katukurunda South under the patronage of Kumaratunga.

Addressing the gathering, Kumaratunga said the UNP hatched various conspiracies to topple the progressive Governments elected by the people. The UNP Governments which came to power later propelled the people towards an abyss. The 17 year UNP rule and the past two years' UNP administration are perfect examples for it, he said.

"Therefore this election may be the final opportunity for the people to take a decision on behalf of the country. However, it is very clear that the people will not re-elect the UNF Government which suppressed the people in a more severe manner," he said.

Kumaratunga said only the true sons of the soil know this reality. Those who have been Westernised and those who live abroad 365 days a year do not feel the pulse of the common people. That is why steps were taken to destroy the CWE which provided consumer items to the poor at concessionary rates.

He said the UNF Government which is full of bribery and corruption has no other State properties to loot at present. Certain Ministers and chairmen have exploited public funds while tourism and electricity sectors have rapidly collapsed.
