Thirty five child soldiers released in Trincomalee Thirty five former child soldiers were released to UNICEF in Trincomalee yesterday by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), states a UNICEF press release. The 35 children are all boys and aged between 12 to 18 years. UNICEF will begin work immediately to reunite the children with their families and reintegrate them back into their communities. "UNICEF welcomes the release of these children," said Geoffrey Keele, UNICEF spokesperson in Sri Lanka. "It is important that we first meet the basic needs of these children for shelter and food, but then work quickly to reunite them with their families. It is only once these children are back at home that they can truly live the lives of children, not soldiers. "However, UNICEF says that despite the release of the 35 children, the LTTE has continued to recruit children into the organisation across the North and the East. |
