Mrs. Charlotte Wijetunge, mother of late Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera called on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at President’s House recently. She was accompanied by late Ven. Soma Thera’s brother Pathmasiri Wijetunge. During the meeting Mrs. Wijetunge thanked the President for appointing a commission to probe the circumstances which led to the Ven. Soma Thera’s demise in response to the requests made by the Buddhist public. Discussions also centred round the need to conduct the probe in an impartial manner. The discussion held at President’s House was also attended by Ven. Dharmasiri Thera, Viharadhipathi Washington Buddhist Viharaya, Ven. Hakmana Sumanasiri Thera, Ven. Kirama Dhammananda Thera, Ven. Lankananda Thera, Upatissa Karunaratne, President, Maharagama Sasana Sevaka Samithiya, Sarath Imbulemure, Secretary, Jana Vijaya Organisation and P. R. Ratnapalana member Dayaka Sabha

Cooperate to make General Election free and fair

"I appeal to all Sri Lankan citizens to extend their fullest cooperation to make the General Election on Friday April 2, 2004 a free and fair one. The right to vote is a sacred democratic privilege we Sri Lankans have experienced for over 70 years. I am confident that our people would once more demonstrate their commitment to freedom, democracy and human rights through this election.

Lankans go to polls today

Sri Lankans will go to the polls today to elect 225 people's representatives to Parliament. The General Election, the 13th in Sri Lankan Parliamentary history, will begin at 7 am in 10,670 polling booths in 22 districts across the country. Polling will end at 4 pm. Nearly 12.89 million voters are eligible to participate in this year's poll, conducted according to the 2002 electoral list.

The scene outside the Jaffna District Secretariat was one of comings and goings yesterday, but the centre of attraction were not the officials, but the brown coloured sealed boxes they were carrying and being escorted out of the premises by Policemen.
