Security has been further bolstered in Batticaloa ahead of today's polls, defence sources said. Batticaloa witnessed four killings in the campaign period, including two candidates. Soldiers and police intensified patrols in the city centre and outskirts. Roadblocks were also set up. "We are taking no chances. All steps have been taken to ensure fool-proof security," military officials said. An additional 1,000 soldiers have been deployed for elections in Batticaloa, taking the total to 2,000. There are also 2,000 policemen on duty. Two policemen will guard each polling station in addition to troops. Polls monitors have arrived in Batticaloa and will be visiting their respective polling stations today. Batticaloa has 303,928 voters in the electorates of Kalkudah, Batticaloa and Padirippu. Some 5,300 officials are engaged in elections duties. |
