Team Caltex geared for motor racing season Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited, who pioneered the development of Motor Racing in this country with a lucrative sponsorship package to rejuvenate the sport from its dire straits few years back, has assured their commitment once again as their Team Caltex is ready to take to the track for the 2004 season. Team Caltex, the pioneer and the leading team on the track holds a very good track record so far and is geared with determination this year to show their pioneering spirits once again. Caltex, who firmly believes in upgrading the standards of Motor Sports in Sri Lanka, has shown continuation to this sponsorship this year too, bearing testimony in their commitment to develop Motor Sports. Caltex embarked on a two pronged strategy to enhance Motor sports by firstly introducing a structured sponsorship program for racing drivers and riders. This resulted in an increased number of talented individuals being more competitive in their respective categories. Increased participation at all levels is another factor that will determine the future of Motor sports. The companies' commitment to upgrade Motor Sports in Sri Lanka was evident with the opening of the Caltex Prokart track at Millennium Park. The track is a haven to all experienced drivers and it also serves to promote the sport and develop new talent. As the slogan goes, the oil we race is the oil we sell, Caltex Lubricants, the leading marketer has shown promise as they have always been able to capture the top position in all races their teammates participated in. Meet the team Caltex..! Aravinda Premadasa: A pioneer member of Team Caltex, young Aravinda Premadasa began racing from a very young age. He began his spree of wins from the 97 Kandy Road races and won the open event; Radella, Mahagastota, Ratnapura road races for 2000. Aravinda has raced at the '98 Radella, Mahagastota and Ratnapura road races 2000 and was placed at all his events. All Foxhill races of '97, '99 and 2000 in the Open event and over 2000CC modified cars, Aravinda has brought glory to Team Caltex. He holds the SLARDAR Championship for the Super Car event for the year 2003. Aravinda will be in action in his Caltex Evo VI and Caltex Impreza this season. Yoga Perera: Began his racing career in 1981 and his best has been in the All India Motor Races for which he won the Mini events and recorded the fastest timing in the Minnies. He will be driving a Caltex Mini and a Caltex 323 during this season. Rizvi Farouk: Started racing in 1990 and have taken part in all major events including Speed Car Racing, Rallies, Hill climbs and Super Cross Events. Driving a Caltex V-Tec 1600, Caltex Formula Rizvi currently holds the Class records in SLARDAR. Avidh Wahab: Will race with the 'big boys' in his Caltex Civic in the Open modified event over 1665. He had got 14 podium position with 11 wins including Gajaba, Foxhill, Pannala and Katukurunda last year. Javidh will be in full form for this year's Fox Hill. Prasanna Ranasinghe: Also races with a Caltex Havoline Charade along with a Caltex Lazer. Ranasinghe has been wining events at Fox Hill, Mihintale, Karandapona and Colombo Super Cross. Nishan Wasalathanthri: A racing enthusiast turned a professional will be in action in his Caltex Ford Lazer in the category 1500 group A Class 12-14 KG/HP. Wasalathanthri was placed 4th at the Wace Park Hill climb and Ratnapura Road. Nishan also became the SLARDAR Champion in his category last year. He will also be driving a Caltex Cultus. Dhammikka Peiris: Races in his Caltex Honda Civic in the 10-12 KG/HP category and his 1992 Caltex Ford Lazer in Group 'A' 12-14 KG/HP. Peiris was away from racing for few years but has come back strongly on course to record Mahagastota and Radalle. Nalin Perera: Last year's Fastest Driver at the Fox Hill Super Cross, Nalin D. Perera, has been able to come to the front fore with a few victories thereafter. Driving a Caltex STI VII, Nalin will be a challenge to many a big name this season. Maduranga Caldera: Having come to the racing track in 1998 with Katukurunda Races, Maduranga has been able to maintain his standards with Caltex Honda CBR 250 in motor racing circuits. Rider with international exposure, as he took part in the Korean Races in 2003 with riders from 17 other countries. This year, he has been able to capture winning position in all the events participated so far and would be the rider to lead the circuit at the end of the season. Damien Gunatillake: SLARDAR Championship rider for the past six years, Damien is a veteran on his bike, is undoubtedly, Sri Lanka's most consistent and the leading rider since he took to the track. He rides a Caltex Honda RS 125, Caltex Honda CBR 250 is tipped to retain his title this season too. |
