by Ariyaratne Ganegoda Radio Announcer Tissa Jayawardena's ability as a commentator was best shown as he was commentating on the farewell parade to late Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, when the visiting Premier was assaulted with a riffle butt by a Navy personnel on parade, soon after the signing of Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord, stated the former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's message of condolence read out at the funeral ceremony of Tissa Jayawardene at the General Cemetery, Borella, last Saturday Tissa had continued his commentary calmly. The Message of Condolence read out by the former Media Minister Imitiasz Bakeer Markar referred to Tissa Jayawardene's career, begun as a Relief Announcer in the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and said that his sudden demise left a void in the field of mass media that cannot be replaced. He never failed in his duties whatever the position he undertook.His radio program "Parisara Sirisara" was extremely popular among schoolchildren and environmentalists. He served the SLBC as an announcer, as a commentator and as a Deputy Director General. He was the President of the SLBC Trade Union affiliated to the UNP while being a member of the Executive Committee of the parent Union.I convey my condolences to his widow Sandhya, his two daughters and friends and relations of the bereaved family," stated the message. Former Lands Minister Rajitha Senaratne, Environmental Journalist Sunil Sarath Perera, Richmond College Old Boys' Association President Ravi Aruthanathan and SLBC Branch Secretary Nimal Premasiri delivered funeral orations, while Professor Vinie Vitharana delivered the vote of thanks. |
