Minister pledges to boost scientific research

by Manjula Fernando

The new Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana yesterday assured his utmost commitment to boost local scientific research and lay a firm foundation to bridge the technology gap that has deterred the country's pace towards development.

Speaking on his assuming duties at the Ministry at Elvitigala Mawatha, Colombo yesterday Prof.Vitharana said: "We must strive to invent new technology which is most suitable to our country. Health, Agriculture and Power sectors should receive immediate attention."

He promised local scientists' facilities for research and development, after noting that the local scientific community was also among the most ill-treated.

Observing that the country's power sector was fragile and far short of the actual requirement, the Minister said the country needed a comprehensive power policy with short and long term strategies to encounter the unexpected challenges.
