Lokubandara elected Speaker

After ten tension packed hours of high drama in which a tie was declared at the first round of voting and with the Tamil National Alliance and the Jathika Hela Urumaya joining forces in support of the UNP nominee, in the third round of voting, former Minister of Justice and Leader of the House, W. J. M. Lokubandara of the UNP was elected Speaker of the 13th Parliament yesterday.

Government confident of facing any challenge

SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said the election of the Speaker from the UNP with a majority of one vote will not cause any obstacle to the functions of the Freedom Alliance Government. "The Freedom Alliance Government is also confident of facing any challenge in Parliament," he said over national television last night.

Notice issued on SB Dissanayake returned unserved

The notice issued on S.B. Dissanayake, former Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi to appear before the Supreme Court to answer the contempt charges had been returned unserved, the Registrar of the Supreme Court said.

New Speaker pledges to safeguard dignity of House

Newly elected Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara yesterday pledged to perform his duties in an independent manner, safeguarding the dignity and decorum of Parliament and upholding its traditions. He also called on all members to extend their support to safeguard democracy and Parliamentary traditions.
