All Ceylon Hindu Congress wants Kovil protected

All Ceylon Hindu Congress General Secretary has appealed to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to protect the Shri Shanmuganatha Swami Kovil in Maskeliya at its precincts. The General Secretary in a letter to the President stated the Kovil is an ancient Hindu Kovil built in 1917 with the rock stones brought by Indian architects.

In 1969, this kovil got submerged in water during the construction of the Mousakelle Reservoir, the letter stated.

It said: "When water got dried in 1993/94 certain unruly elements tried to remove the stones and the matter was brought to the notice of the authorities.

The water has now again dried and the temple has emerged. Certain people are unlawfully and wrongfully seeking to mine gems in the temple precincts and damage the temple.

We appeal to Your Excellency to intervene in the matter and take steps forthwith to protect the kovil and its precincts.

We are sending this memorandum on the basis of the information furnished by one of our member associations, the Maskeliya Hindu Ma Mandram.
