Passenger traffic across entry/exit points in Batticaloa restricted

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) with the concurrence of the Security Forces Commander (East), the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) and the LTTE has decided to keep all entry/exit points in Batticaloa and Ampara districts closed for passenger traffic on a daily basis from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.

This arrangement has been intimated to respective Divisional Secretariats and the LTTE on 29 April 2004 and was meant to ensure prevention of the entry of unauthorised persons, arms and ammunition into cleared areas from uncleared areas and vice versa.

However, passage of the sick and cases of emergency during these restricted hours is to be facilitated on a case by case basis at the entry/exit points, the Ministry of Defence said in a press release yesterday.
