British team keen on investing in N-E by Anjana Gamage A four member delegation from the British Chamber of Commerce and Industry in UK yesterday expressed their keenness to invest in Sri Lanka especially in the North and East in the IT sector, textile and tourism promotion. They conveyed their keenness to Industries, Investment and Tourism Promotions Minister Anura Bandaranaike when they met him at the BOI office yesterday. They were accompanied by British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Stephen Evans and First Secretary (Commercial) Dave Warring. Minister Bandaranaike said several experts in the fields of investment and tourism promotion are studying the special incentive packages the Government plans to introduce to boost the tourism industry. "We have to identify shortcomings in these areas first. That is why a team of experts are now making a study. Once the final report is prepared, the incentive packages will be implemented," he said. "The delegation has acknowledged that their visit was successful and wanted to begin investments here immediately. The delay is on our part and we have to clear the road blocks for their investment. Peace should dawn in these areas and we have to ensure that first. It is only then that will we be able to see a flood of tourists in the country," the Minister said. According to Mr. Bandaranaike, there is a shortage of 16,000 hotel rooms. About 300,000 locals are employed in the country's tourism sector. The delegation comprised Elaine Walker of International Trade Officer of Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kelvin Van Hasselt, Marketing and Public Relations of KVH Books, Diane Edgar of Insight Marketing Services and Maggie Wareham of International Trade Manager, Business Link Wessex. |
