Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb tomorrow The Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb 2004 for Preethi Palliyaguru Memorial Trophy will take place tomorrow at Browns Hill. The meet for the first time has been included as part of the Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) National Hill Climb Championships and is expected to draw the cream of racing drivers and riders in the country. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse will be the chief guest at the meet, while he will also keenly witness his two sons participating in the Nissan March One Make event. The Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb was initiated by the late Preethi Palliyaguru, a stalwart of the motor racing community in the south and founder member of the Southern Motor Sports Club. Preethi died on the morning of the event in 2000 while he was the President of the club. He was keen to present the best racing event from the south and bring the best of Sri Lanka's racers to patronize the event. Nishan Weerasooriya who holds the course record of 35.94 seconds set in 1999 will be looking to defend his title and clinch the Preethi Palliyaguru Challenge Trophy for the Best Time of the Day. The organizers have introduced the challenge trophy and decided to rename the event in memory of Preethi Palliyaguru. Among other leading contenders would be Dilshard Hamdoon and Dinesh Senanayake both of whom set in new records in their respective events. Meanwhile, the national championship leaders would also be out to retain their leadership in the National Hill Climb Championship points tally having completed two meetings in Mahagastota and Radella. The national championship titles are awarded by SLAS, the governing body for automobile sports for the performance of five identified Hill Climb meets. The other two meetings for the year would be the Wace Park and Kotmale hill climbs. Drivers participating in the SLN Ford Laser/Mazda 323 - 1500 cc One Make, SLA Cars over 1600 cc (upto and including 3500cc), SLN Cars 6 to 8 Kg/Hp and Formula Ford 1600cc Standard (post 1985) are eligible for the national championships. The co-sponsors for the event are Wheels Lanka, Willy's Trading, MRF Car Care, Harishchandra Mills, Cargills, DFCC Bank, Kings Beer, LOLC, Nihal Gems - Kahawatta and Lakshman Motors, Panchikawatta. The Eliyakanda Hill Climb is open free to spectators commence at the main gate of the Residence of the District Secretary at Browns Hill, Matara situated along Beach Road in Matara. The 1,771.2 feet tarmac track is best viewed from the spectator area at the strategic Pearl Cliff Corner adjoining the Pearl Cliff Hotel. |
