SLMC has own way with UNP

by P. Krishnaswamy

A stand off between the UNP and its constituent Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) over the appointment of two National List MPs for the vacant slots created following the resignation of SLMC MPs Pushpakumara and Ismail Kuthoos has been settled, according to party sources.

The 23 member SLMC high command which met last night to discuss the matter unanimously decided to insist on the appointments of party frontliners Basheer Segu Dawood and S. Nijamudeen who were earlier nominated by them, the sources said.

Although the UNP wanted to appoint former Parliamentary Affairs Minister A. H. M. Azwer to one of the slots, the SLMC rejected this and insisted on the appointment of their nominees.

SLMC Secretary General M.T. Hasan Ali told the 'Daily News' that in accordance with the electoral agreement that they have entered into with the UNP, SLMC nominees have to be appointed as MPs against vacancies created in the National List by their members and the UNP would not be allowed to violate this agreement.
