Solheim here today Norwegian special envoy Erik Solheim is due here today for a series of discussions with Government and LTTE leaders aimed at reviving the peace negotiations. Solheim will meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, senior ministers, Opposition representatives and civil society leaders during his four-day official visit. Solheim and Ambassador Hans Brattskar will travel to Kilinochchi on Wednesday for consultations with the leader of LTTE's Political Wing, S.P. Thamilselvam, the Norwegian Embassy said. This follows his visit to Sri Lanka last month and Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen's meeting with President Kumaratunga in London. Solheim also had a two-hour discussion with LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham at his London residence last week. Earlier this month, Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskaar met the LTTE political leadership in the Wanni. The Ambassador later briefed Peace Secretariat head Jayantha Dhanapala on this meeting. Helgesen and Brattskaar have also apprised the new Indian government on the developments in Sri Lanka and their efforts to restart the peace talks. Cabinet spokesman and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera reiterated the Government's commitment to achieve peace, at last week's Cabinet news briefing. |
