National Cleaner Production Centre completes two years The Central Environmental Authority under the Industrial Pollution Reduction Program introduced the concept of Cleaner Production to Sri Lanka in 1993. Since then many Cleaner Production Initiatives were introduced from time to time by many service providers. Small and Medium Enterprise Developers (SMED) started a Cleaner Production cell in 1997 to promote this concept among the SMEs and through this cell the principles and practices were introduced to many industries However, it was felt that the establishment of a National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) was a pressing need to ensure Cleaner Production (CP) to be integrated into industry sector. UNIDO/UNEP were in agreement to select SMED as the national host organisation and after many deliberations and discussions the NCPC became a reality in May 2002. During the last two years NCPC conducted programs to promote cleaner production not only in the industry sector but also in other economic sectors. Realising the need for creating awareness on CP, the centre organised awareness programs aiming at different stakeholders. The centre conducted awareness programs for university academics, media, bank personnel, chambers, public sector, industrialists of different sectors and other interested parties. As a follow up to these awareness seminars several training programs had been organised by the centre to train professionals in applying Cleaner Production methodology to improve resource utilisation, efficiency and reduce negative environmental impact of industrial processes. The centre assisted many industries to assess their production processes by conducting quick scan assessment and many of the industries have decided to proceed with comprehensive Cleaner Production assessments on their processes in order to minimise their waste generation. NCPC has commenced a few demonstration projects to introduce CP into selected industries in the rubber, coconut, plastic and textile sector. The centre has worked with provincial chambers such as Sabaragamuwa and Wayamba to introduce CP in provincial industrial enterprises. Extending application of CP beyond industries the NCPC has already started to work with the Hotel sector to promote the concept. Usefulness of Cleaner Production can be extended by integrating with other environmental tools such as Environmental Management Systems for ISO 1400, Eco Design, Life Cycle Analysis.
