Pension anomalies will be rectified expeditiously - Minister

Maharagama special correspondent, Vehella Piyathilake

The government pensioners are the senior citizens of the country. They have devoted their lives for the prosperity of the country and the people. It is the responsibility of any government to look after them; Minister of Power and Energy Susil Premajayantha said.

He was speaking at the anniversary meeting of Colombo district Pensioners' Unions Federation held at the Maharagama Urban Council Conference Hall recently. The Minister said that from the era of the British rule the legal rights of the Pensioners was accepted by the constitution.

'In 1978 J. R. Jayewardene had erased off even the name of the Pensioners from the Constitution. The government had decided to include the rights of the pensioners in the forthcoming constitution proposals.

As a policy our government had decided to minimise salary differences of the pensioners.

There is no other government which had fulfilled the promises given by their manifestos in such a short period. The appointment for 27,000 graduates will be made in August. All the children in schools will get their free uniforms without any difference at the end of 2004.

History and Literature the subjects left out from the school curriculum will be included from next year. The railway authority is being already scrapped and the Railway Department will be preserved, he said.

The government wishes to introduce new schemes to minimise problems of pensioners in the near future.

The Secretary of the Federation A. V. S. Gunawardane made the welcome speech and the meeting was chaired by the chairman of the Federation K. S. Karunaratne.

Minister of Environment and Natural Resources A. H. M. Fowzie, the Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Tissa Vitharana and the Director of Pensions K. A. Tillakaratne also spoke.
