Three SLMC rebel MPs yesterday filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging their expulsion from the Party.

In this application, the petitioners Hussein Ahmed Bhaila (National List MP), R. Bahurdeen (Wanni district) and Abdul B. Anul (Trincomalee) have cited the SLMC, its leader Rauff Hakeem, SLMC Secretary General Hasan Ali , the UNP,its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe , Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayaka and the Secretary General of Parliament Priyani Wijesekara as respondents.

The petitioners inter alia states that on May 16,2004 the Rupavahini telecast a video recording of a statement made by one Mrs Kumari Cooray attacking Rauff Hakeem on his moral character and on 17 May,2004 the Sirasa TV channel telecast an interview given by Mrs Cooray to Lasantha Wickramatunga falsely implicating the petitioners and several others as those who supported the telecast of the Video Tape about that incident.

The petitioners further state that on May 28, 2004 , they received a letter dated 25 May, 2004 singed by the third respondent calling for their explanation pertaining to the incident. Thereafter, the petitioners requested time to respond to the show cause letter. However on May 30 evening the petitioners were expelled from the party by High Command of the SLMC.

The petitioners prayed that notice be issued on the respondents and to set aside the said letter of expulsion and to declare that petitioners still remain as MPs. They also prayed that the said letter of expulsion be declared null and void.
