D. Lalkantha has written to the Commissioner of Elections requesting him to educate Heads of State institutions and Corporations through the media about the duty leave employees are entitled to cast their votes at the Provincial Council election. Mr. Lalkantha has said his union had received complaints from its membership about instances where certain heads had refused the exact number of duty leave hours due to their employees on the basis of the distance from their workplace to the polling stations. Under election laws, an employee is entitled to a minimum of 4 hours duty leave to cast his or her vote at an election. But this time limit should change according to the distance from the workplace to the polling station of the employee. Some heads of institutions are reported to have acted in an arbitrary manner and refused to extend the number of hours of duty leave entitled to certain employees and this was a breach of their democratic right to cast their vote and elect a candidate of their choice to the respective Provincial Council, Mr. Lalkantha has said. |
