19 Maoists, 11 security men killed in Nepal, EU calls for cease-fire

KATHMANDU, Thursday (PTI) At least 30 people, including 19 Maoists and 11 securitymen, were killed in the latest skirmishes in western Nepal even as European Union called for a ceasefire.

Eleven security personnel and as many rebels were killed in a gun battle at Kalimati Kalche village of Salyan district yesterday, the Prime Minister's office sources said today. Ten securitymen were also injured in the incident. In separate incidents six rebels were killed in Dailekh and two killed in Rupandehi districts, they said.

The EU, in a statement issued yesterday, called for an immediate cease-fire to end human suffering and destruction.

Cease-fire is necessary for creating a conducive atmosphere for dialogue between the government and the Maoists, said the statement issued by Danish Embassy on behalf of the heads of the Mission of the EU based in Kathmandu.

The cease-fire would allow the negotiations without pre-conditions, it said.
