He said this was the second victory for the UPFA Government within three months after coming into power under the leadership of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. "We now have got a clear victory to move forward with our program Country Forward," Dr. Amunugama said. Post, Telecommunication and Upcountry Development Minister D.M. Jayaratne said the people have reaffirmed their confidence in the UPFA Government by giving power to manage affairs of the seven Provincial Councils. Jayaratne said the majority of people had expressed the need of the two major political parties to join hands in solving political and national problems, vital for the country's progress. He said the people have understood mistakes politicians and political parties do and realise that their interest is centred in capturing political power but no interest in solving problems. "If political parties and politicians are genuinely interested in the country's future they should work towards protecting democracy, find solutions to economic, social and political problems and also work to fulfil hopes and aspirations of the people and not look merely for political power," Jayaratne said. |
