The prevention of irregular promotions and the establishment of a law abiding and disciplined police force were among the primary objectives of introducing a National Police Commission. But among the groups who have received promotions on the recommendation of the Commission, the media revealed, that there are officers who face charges, convicts, expatriates and even officers serving prison sentences, stated Weerawansa's letter to the President. Recalling the pioneering role played by the JVP and the SLFP to introduce an Independent Police Commission under the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, he pointed out that the Freedom Alliance cannot remain silent when anomalies of this nature occur totally in contrast with the objective of establishing a Police Commission. These promotions made on a list prepared during the past UNP regime has brought about utter disgust among a large number of police officers who were reasonably entitled to promotion on seniority and on merit. I call upon the President to appoint an Investigation Commission to inquire and report on the criteria taken into consideration when recommending promotions and the people responsible for awarding such promotions and also recommend steps that should be taken to avoid such errors in the future, urged Wimal Weerawansa's memorandum to the President. |
