Arjuna visits KEPZ Arjuna Ranatunga Deputy Minister of Industry, Tourism & Investment Promotion visited the Katunayake Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) last week. The KEPZ the oldest in the country consists of 60,000 workers and almost 90 factories, and accounts for 15% in exports, approximately 200 million was collected from the zone in local sales, and 100 million recovered from exports, last year. During his visit the Deputy Minister said, " We will give any support needed from the Ministry to investors. We will try and sort as many issues as possible today." The meeting also involved a discussion of the problems faced by the investors in the Zone. The Deputy Minister also said he would discuss issues such as the exemption of VAT and crate charges after discussing it with Anura Bandaranaike Minister of Industry, Tourism & Investment Promotion and seeking Cabinet approval. " I am hoping to visit this zone as well as the other zones in the country once every three months and talk personally to the investors and the employees, and as far as possible try and sort out any problems faced by them." The day also involved an open forum with workers, where they were able to personally discuss their problems. They raised the issue of increments in their wages and transportation. He further said that salary increments would be referred to the Cabinet through the Minister. He also assured workers they would continue to have their jobs. |
