B. Dissanayake should bear the responsibility themselves for the UNP defeat at the recent Provincial Council election, charged the Central Province UNP candidates and supporters. Answering the party organisation they pointed out that the leaders had failed even to hold a single propaganda meeting in the Central Province. Despite S. B. Dissanayake's rhetorical outbursts there was hardly any organisation within the party to ensure victory at the Provincial Council elections, the party activists bemoaned. Whilst Ranil Wickremesinghe at his meeting with the Central Province party stalwarts should have enlightened them on the ways and means of winning the Provincial Council elections, he had unfortunately harped on the attack on JHU Members of Parliament inside Parliament instead, the activists complained. 'Since the UNP high command failed to nominate a candidate for the chief ministerialship in the Central Province the party candidates in Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts were campaigning for the preferential votes rather than ensuring the party victory.' Large scale frauds committed by the UNP parliamentarians was a major cause which could be attributed to the UNP's defeat, the UNPers alleged. |
