| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | New SP Chief Minister to provide better service Bentota group correspondent The new Chief Minister of Southern Province Shan Wijayalal de Silva said that he intends to provide a better service to the people of the province. After being sworn in as the new Chief Minister of the Southern Province before the Governor Kingsley T. Wickremaratne, the Chief Minister said that he hoped to work with the blessing of President, Prime Minister and the Governor of the Province. "With the blessing of the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Southern Province Governor Kingsley T. Wickremaratne I intend to render a better service to the Southern Province from today as the Chief Minister", de Silva said. He said so at a meeting held at Southern Province Governor's Secretariat after taking his oath as the Chief Minister before the Governor Kingsley T. Wickremaratne. The Chief Minister also said: I was elected to the SPC in 1993 for the first time and hence served as the Deputy Chairman, and again as the Chairman for the past five years. I am an old boy of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda later gained admission to Moratuwa University for higher education and during that time engaged in politics through the students union there. After leaving Moratuwa University I joined Sri Lanka Customs and worked as a Custom Officer for 12 years, thereafter in 1981 I was appointed as the SLFP Chief Organiser for Ambalangoda by the late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike and continue in the same capacity until now, he said. I will take this opportunity to thank specially to you for electing me for the SPC several times. Former Galle district MP Ven. Baddegama Samitha Thera said, I came to know Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva when I was in SPC. He is a gentleman politician. He is the most suitable person for this high post. |
